This project was a design build off-grid development to house homeless families on O’ahu.  Photonworks Engineering designed a microgrid to power a village of 144 housing units and community buildings consisting of a preschool, daycare, laundry facility, management office, police station, and sundry store.  The system is sized to cover all loads plus charge a central battery during daytime, and to deliver battery power back to residences and streetlights during nights.  Water heating is also done using solar energy.

In total, this project will house over half of the State’s homeless families.  By providing jobs and childcare, Kahauiki Village breaks the cycle of homelessness for the families who live there.
